A magnitude 5.6 earthquake that struck Egypt has drawn renewed attention to the role of disaster preparedness in protecting rapidly expanding urban centres and critical infrastructure. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth and was felt across parts of the country, although there were no immediate reports of significant casualties or widespread damage. 

While Egypt experiences earthquakes less frequently than many other parts of the world, its location near active tectonic zones linked to the Gulf of Suez and the eastern Mediterranean means seismic activity remains an enduring consideration for national planning.
