The Peruvian government rejected a recommendation from a United Nations advisory body calling for the release of former President Pedro Castillo. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the recommendation is not legally binding and therefore will not influence decisions made by Peru’s courts. Officials emphasised that the country’s judicial institutions are independent and that all legal proceedings involving Castillo will continue under the framework of the national constitution and existing laws.

Pedro Castillo has remained in detention since his removal from office in December 2022 after attempting to dissolve Congress before an impeachment vote. His supporters continue to argue that his detention is politically motivated and have organised demonstrations demanding his release. Meanwhile, the government insists that judicial authorities — not political leaders or international organisations — must determine the outcome of the case through due legal process.

The government’s response reflects Peru’s continued effort to defend its judicial sovereignty while navigating ongoing political divisions. The case remains one of the country’s most closely watched political issues, attracting both domestic attention and international interest as Peru works to maintain institutional stability amid recurring protests and political uncertainty.
