Trinidad and Tobago Leads Regional Chemical Weapons Convention Meeting

Trinidad and Tobago officially opened the 27th Regional Meeting of National Authorities of States Parties in Latin America and the Caribbean to the Chemical Weapons Convention in Port of Spain. The meeting brought together representatives from countries across the region and officials from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to strengthen cooperation on preventing chemical weapons use and improving national implementation of the Convention.

Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers welcomed delegates and highlighted Trinidad and Tobago’s role, alongside Bolivia, as Co-Chair of the Regional Network of National Authorities for Latin America and the Caribbean. He emphasised the importance of regional collaboration, information sharing, and strong national systems to ensure chemicals are used only for peaceful and legitimate purposes.

The meeting focused on issues including national legislation, chemical safety and security, capacity building, and cooperation between governments and international organisations. Trinidad and Tobago also reaffirmed its commitment to international law, multilateral cooperation, and efforts to strengthen chemical security across the Caribbean and Latin America.
